As you might already be aware, Mexico City is built on a lake bed. Here is a picture of what the city might have looked like at the peak of it's Aztec occupation, when it had perhaps as many as 60,000 residents. Now, most of the lake has been filled in, and the population is of course much higher. Many of the older buildings (such as the Metropolitan Cathedral) are not built on very solid fill, and are sinking into the ground. This image also gives you an idea of one of the other problems facing Mexico City. It is surrounded by mountains, which tends trap the air in the city, exacerbating the city's already bad pollution problem.

This image comes from the national Anthropology Museum in Mexico City.
