The Khalifa, which is recognizable to the West as Caliph, is a title significant for its meaning: "successor". As the successor to the prophet Mohammad, the Khalifa was recognized as the leader of the Ummah, the community of Islam, or in other words the Islamic world. The Khalifa was frequently called Ameer al-Mumineen, meaning "commander of the Faithful".
