Beginning with the great migration of the Cimbri and Teutones, the periodic movement of Germanic peoples had an enormous impact on the history of Europe. These migrations and invasions reached a peak in the Fourth to Sixth Centuries, which saw peoples who had their origins in Scandinavia settling in France, Spain and Africa.
These movements of the tribes had the decline and eventual collapse of the Western Roman Empire as their background and saw some of the most famous and colourful characters of early Germanic history rise to prominence.
