Sparta – Laconia

Welcome to a group devoted to the academic research of what we call city-state of Sparta (Sparth) and its region named Lakonia (Lakwnia).

We are going to explore the ancient city and area by the use of archaeological and literary evidences. Question, such as, what was the mythical beginning of the State or when that area was populate in history, what was the religious cult usable to that region and how different was from the other Greek States, what was their political, cultural organization?

We are going to explore the city close by and examine its architectural status. Maps and photos will be displayed.

For the lovers of literature, we are going to uncover and maybe discover writing material from the Dorian land, which are going to prove the Spartan literature existence!

“Sparta or Lacedaemon is the major city in Laconia in the Southeast of Peloponnese, the 'great island' of Pelops, king of Mycenae and Argos. Doric tribes, homogenous Hellenic tribes, established Sparta at the northern end of the fertile Eurotas valley, protected by spectacular mountain barriers of Taygetus and Parnon on either side.” (-Submitted by Nikolaos Cleomenes)
