Eravisci
Territory: Dunaújváros (Transdanubia)
Tribal Capital: Gellért Hill (in modern Budapest, Hungary)
Few things are known about the Eravisci, but what we do know is that they were a tribe of highly cultured Celts, who worked with iron, decorated their earthenware pots and even minted their own coins. From roughly 50 BCE until perhaps 20 BCE, they struck a well-known, thoroughly catalogued series of coins derived from Republican originals.
The Eravisci occupied much of Transdanubia (Hungary). Some say they moved into the region from the North in the third and fourth century BCE. One of their main settlements/hillforts was on the Danube river, around modern day Budapest, nowadays known at Gellért Hill. Another important centre of the tribe was Aquincum, a Roman military base, situated on the right bank of the Danube at an important crossing, where waterways and land routes met.
During the first century BCE, the Eravisci were subdued by the Romans and absorbed into Pannonia, a large province of the Roman Empire. This province was subsequently divided into two regions, one of which, Pannonia Inferior, was governed from the Roman garrison town of Aquincum.
The Eraviscan culture remained strong throughout the (early part of the) Roman occupation. Evidence of this is found on tombstone reliefs, which pictures Celtic dress and jewelry.
