Sargon of Akkad (Šarrukînu, meaning "the true king" or "the king is legitimate", also known as Sargon the Great), founder of the city of Agade and the Akkadian dynasty, unifier of Sumer and Akkad (2334 BC - 2279 BC).

Sargon of Akkad was a prominent member of the royal court of Kish, and after overthrowing its king he set out to conquer Mesopotamia. It is said that his empire stretched from Elam to the Mediterranean, including Mesopotamia, parts of modern-day Iran and Syria, probably also parts of Anatolia and the Arabian peninsula. According to the Sumerian king list, he had his new capital, Akkad (Agade) built/renovated on the left bank of the Euphrates. Sargon is one of the first in recorded history to create a multiethnic, centrally ruled empire. His dynasty reigned Mesopotamia for about 150 years.
