MOTHER ROME

Upon a panorama I awaken.
While strolling the night's panoply
I thus find before me
This Rome, of dust, long settled.
Alone I kneel, shaken.
The Forum beneath me...stable, sure
Unfallen.
The aroma of Tiber and marble
The promise of Augustan footprints
Silence my fears.

I kneel before Thee, Mother Rome.
Returned I am to your breast.
Give me again your heartbeat.
Wrench time back from yesterday!
Give me one whisper of your splendor.
Make me one with Thy blood..
I, too, am Rome, you are my breath.

The stage so empty, so decorated.
My feet do not move.
I am as one transfixed.
Your Vestal fires burn in me,
The Lares you offer are my gods.
Great Roma! Dominia Dulcis!
I miss Thee as an orphaned child
Longs for the arms of her mother.
Enfold your daughter, Ancient Matrona!
Give to me once more your splendored peace.
