was_"a large Tobacco-pipe made of red, black, or white marble. The head is finely polished, and the quill, which is commonly two feet and a half long, is made of a strong reed or cane, adorned with feathers of all colors, interlaced with locks of women's hair. They tie to it two wings of the most curious birds which makes the calumet not unlike Mercury's wand. They sheeth that reed into the neck of birds [huars] loons... or a duck who makes it's home in the trees. Every nation adorns the calumet as they think fit according to their own genius and the birds they have in their country.
It sufficed for one to carry and show it to walk in saftety in the midst of enemies who in the hottest fight lay down thir weapons when it is displayed."
