Tortworth is 4 miles south of Berkeley, 4 miles west of Wotton, 24 miles southwest of Gloucester and about 2 miles northwest of Charfield. The parish has some woodland and some arable land, but it's mainly dairy pasture. It is prominent for the Tortworth Chestnut, England's oldest tree, which still grows today. It's a huge, gnarled tree with four main limbs which was recorded as "the Great Chestnut" as far back as the reign of King Stephen, in the 1150s.
