The later medieval period of Scottish history spans the 11th through 15th centuries, starting with the crowning of Malcolm II in 1005 AD, and ending with the founding of King's College, University of Aberdeen by Bishop Elphinstone, the Education Act, the forfeiture of the Lordship of the Isles, and James IV becoming king of Scotland and visiting the Western Highlands.

These are formative years for Scotland, during which several famous invasions and battles take place: the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons are defeated, the Normans and the English invade, alliances are made and charters are signed. These are also the years of the Guardians of Scotland, the Contenders for the Scottish Crown and the theft of the Stone of Destiny, years which echo through time in such great names as MacBeth, William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.
