The early medieval history of Scotland spans six centuries, from 400 AD to 1000 AD. In the beginning of this period, the Picts dominated all of Scotland, and the Dal Riada kings of Ulaid (Ulster region) in Ireland moved their seat of power to the craggy rock of Dunadd in Argyll country.
During the 6th century the early Celtic church established its monastic foundations, and at the start of the 9th century, the Norse began settling in the Orkney Islands in significant numbers.
