In the 8th century Scandinavian peoples began to leave their homelands in search of new lands. From the Nordic kingdoms they were able to journey by boat through the Straits of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean sea, where they made conquests on Italy, Spain, Morocco and the Holy Lands. They also penetrated the Baltic and travelled up rivers in Russia to the Black and Caspian Seas and as far as Baghdad. In Asia, they traded walrus ivory and furs for exotic spices and silver.

Scandinavian countries, being harsh in climate, the best farming land had been inhabited since prehistoric times, that and over population are the most widely believed reasons for the massive outpour of migrations that led the Nordic peoples to settle in such countries as England, Ireland, Scotland, Iceland, Greenland and found the country of Normandy in France, of whom the Normans would later go on to conquer England and create the Anglo-Norman kingdom that almost went on to conquer all of France.
