Situated near the Porta di Stabia, the theatre quarter consisted of the Large Theatre and the covered smaller theatre or Odeion. Whilst the former was the actual theatre for dramas and farces, the Odeion was used mainly for concerts and poetry recitals. Immediately surrounding the theatres are the Gladiators' Barracks, the Triangular Form which includes the Temple of Hercules and later Minerva, the temples of Isis and Jupiter and also the Samnite Gymnasium. So here at times we might find a blended vintage of intellectuals, matronas with thier daughters, a gladiator or two, the gym set, worshippers of Isis and last and least the great and the good of Pompeii who have grabbed all of the best seats!
