The story of Julius Caesar ended on the Ides of March, 44 BC - that of his heir, Gaius Octavius (later, Augustus) began. For nearly 20 years Octavian and Marc Antony manouvered for total power and then, alone, Octavian sought a way to reach absolute power without its appearance. The infamous navel battle at Actium was fought on September 2nd 31BC in the
Ionian sea, and was the final nail in the coffin of the second Triumvirate. Upon his
return to Rome as the victor, Octavian was awarded the title of Imperator by the
Senate, and the Empire was cemented.
