Founded in 300 BC by Selecus I, it was named for his father. Already, at that time, two Greek colonies had been established. it is at the cross routes of the Euphrates to the sea and from El Bika to Asia Minor. It grew to become one of the largest commercial centers and the most sumptuous of cities in the ancient world. there were two main streets at right angles to each other. They were lined with marble colonnades and adorned with temples, palaces, and statues. The city was surrounded by a thick wall. There also was an acqueduct, theater, and castle that in the present century are still visible. Here the followers of Jesus came after having severed themselves from the synagogue.
