I was born in 1956 in Idahum the daughter of a vir militarius and a magistra. I was (and remain) a voracious reader as a child, fond of music and the arts, which I studied diligently at University (along with history, philosophy, theology and a host of other topics).
I studied abroad in Iuvavum in the province of
Noricum, and it
was during this time that I visited Aquincum,
Athenae,
Augusta Trevirorum,
Autricum, Barcino, Belgica, Brundisium,
Cantabrigia,
Carcaso, Carnotum,
Colonia Agrippinae,
Durocorotum,
Durovernum Cantiacorum,
Florentia,
Londinium,
Lutetia,
Massilia,
Narbo,
Neapolis,
Nemasus, Oenipontum,
Pisae,
Segovia,
Venetiae, Vindobona, and...
Roma!
I graduated with a degree in communications, which has evolved over the years
and been put to use in my profession as a web designer. One of the first web
sites I created was devoted to ancient Roman daily life: food, housing, and
fashion. It has expanded over the years and can be found at
www.villaivlilla.com.
My residence in Europe sparked my interest in ancent history (first ignited
by a librarian in primary school who read aloud from Greek and Norse myths),
and soon after I discovered the Internet, I stumbled into the recreated forum
of S.P.Q.R.,
brainchild of two Columbia University professors, in 1996. When I became stymied with a
particular puzzle, I registered on a bulletin board called The Rostra to beg a hint from my fellow players and the creators, whom we dubbed "the Cybergods." I chose the name "Julilla," having just finished the novel First Man in Rome, by Colleen McCullough and the name has stuck with me ever since.
The rest, as they say, is history: soon afterwards, the web community AncientSites was created, and after peppering the creators with suggestions, avatars and questions, I was hired as their first remote site administrator, or "demigod."
I have been happily married to Marcus for XX years now. I have two grown stepsons, Andreas and Ericus, and my son Ioannis, a
Marine. When I am not online, my husband and I ride our motorcycles over hill and dale. I also
am an enthusiastic reenactor, recreating ancient Roman recipes for culinary delights and costmetics, and love
my period Roman encampment.
