Bangsangssi, or "tal," was a traditional Korean funeral mask with four eyes. The golden-eyed mask was worn on the day of the uneral. Different materials were used to make Bangsangsii, depending on status. Masks of wood were reserved for government and powerful families, those of paper were for the noble class, and those made of straw were for commoners.
Bangsangsii was orignally used to exorcise evil spirits as far back as the ancient funeral ceremonies of the Chinese Shilla Dynasty in the 5th or 6th centuries. Bangsangsii was also used for exorcism to welcome a king, or a Chinese envoy.
