Not unlike modern townhouses or condominiums, the Roman house had party walls on either side and an enclosed rear area. The entrance to the Roman house was often flanked by shops which opened onto the street.
The floorplan of most Roman houses was axial, with one end being the fauces and the other the tablinium. Thus, clients entering the domus from the dark confines of the fauces for the daily salutatio might see the patronus seated or standing at the far end of the axis — a dignified and impressive sight.
