A short study of Germanic Branch of Indo- European Languages.
Part 1-Extinct Germanic Languages
Extinct or Near Extinct Languages belonging to the Germanic Branch.
Bastarnae - details of this language are as yet not well known. Bastrnae were a Germanic speaking people who made their appeareance in the area of the lower Danube. Burgundian - was spoken by Germanic speaking inhabitants of southeastern Gaul around the fifth century. Frankish - was probably replaced by Latin derived French. Frankish was spoken in Gaul and the Low Countries hence it would now be classified with the other lowland languages. Some components of Frankish are retained in the Dutch Flemish languages. Herulian - According to the Byzantine historian Procopius a part of the East Germanic people the Heruls/Eruli left the Danubian region after a defeat 508-509 AD and settled at the Scandinavian Peninsula. They supposedly served as mercinaries in the Roman armies and brought their Herulian with them. Gothic- was spoken by Germanic people in southern Gaul, Iberia, and Italy and was displaced around the fifth or sixth century. Gothic probably had its roots in migrations from southern Sweden. There were some Gothic speakers reported in Crimea in the sixteenth century. Lombardic - was spoken by Germanic invaders of Italy in the sixth century. Lombardic shared certain unique sound shifts found in High German. Norn - spoken by the Norse/Irish inhabitants of Shetland Island. Hildina-kvadet is a ballad entirely written in Norn. Hildina-kvadet was written down in 1774 by George Low. He got it from a farmer - Guttorm - at the Shetland island Foula. Rugian- Could Rugian be a dialect of Frankish or Lombardic? Associated with Early Frankish in most chronicles (Roman) that I can find. Scirian- was supposedly a Germanic language spoken in the fourth century by Germanic speakers living in the Carthinigans. they were displaced by the Huns and then became part of the Ostrogoths. Vandalic - was the language of a Germanic speaking people who invaded Gaul, Iberia, and Africa. They founded a kingdom in Africa in the fifth century More Information: Germanic Language Tree |
