1. Who was the mythical founder of Macedon?
Hercules in his wanderings through the great northern forests was led to Macedon by an eagle. Here he fathered 12 sons who founded the twelve tribes of Macedon. All Macedonians are descended from Hercules.
The country was founded by a man named Macedon after the great flood.
Anaeus, traveling home to Italy from The Trojan Wars founded Macedon and left some of his men to populate the new lands. The Macedonians are all descended from the Romans which accounts for their military skills.
Macedon was founded by wandering shepherds from Phrygia who had migrated across Thrace.


2. Macedonians were known for their distinctive Klusia. What was a Klusia?
Klusia was the national dish of Macedon. It was a sheep's stomach stuffed with offal and boiled much like a Scot's hagis.
A klusia was an 11 foot long shepherds pipe tuned to the key of a minor in the Phrygian mode.
The Klusia was a broad brimmed sun hat.
The Macedonian word, Klusia, refers to a part of the anatomy better not mentioned.


3. What was the long Macedonian lance called?
A kontranephalos, which in Greek means, stick in the mud.
It was called the Alerissa after a famous beauty of the day.
A pandartos from which we get the French word, poniard.
The Serissa.


4. After what animal was the city of Aigai named?
The lion. The surrounding lands were known for their large number of lions. Lion hunting was a royal sport and the first kings made their home here.
The fertile grazing lands around Aigai were watered by many spring fed ponds which were infested by mosquitos and the city was named after the mosquito. The malaria problem eventually led to the capital being moved to Pella.
The city was named after the goats which led the founders to the site.
Aigai means boar in Greek. A macedonian boy was not considered to be a man until he had killed a boar without the use of a net. There were plenty of boars in the area.


5. Who moved the capital of Macedon from Pella to Thessaloniki?
In dividing their sphere of world influence, Caesar and Pompey decided to move the capital east.
Darius made Thessaloniki the base of his operations when he was invading Greece and over the years, it grew in importance to outstrip Pella and was made the capitol.
Antigonos Doson, wishing to extend his empire eastward into Thrace moved his royal court to Thessaloniki.
Kassandros, the usurper moved his capital east and named it Thessaloniki in honor of Alexander's half sister.


6. To what tribe did Olympias, the mother of Alexander belong?
Olympias was a Paeonian, a fierce tribe from east of the Strymon.
She was of the Bastarnae, a Thracian tribe related to the Celts who were known for being very tall and having long red hair.
Olympias was a Molossian princess related to the Illyrians.
Her people were unknown in ancient times. She spoke a strange language and called herself a Comanche.


7. Where is Alexander IV, son of Alexander buried?
He was buried in the royal city of Pella. The small tomb excavated near the royal palace has recently been identified as being the tomb of Alexander IV by Telly Savalas.
Alexander IV is buried in Aigai. Tomb 3 of the royal tombs contains the remains of the boy king in a silver urn.
Alexander IV was buried with his father in Alexandria. The tomb is lost to us and is believed to have slipped into the sea.
No one knows what happened to Alexander IV. He mysteriously disappeared in Babylon. It is reported that he was murdered by Stateiria.


8. What was the name of the last king of Macedon?
Amyntas. Old king Amyntas died in captivity on Rome and the Romans turned Macedon into a province. There was never another king.
Perseus. Though the name is the same as the mythological figure who brought fire to mankind, Perseus was really the last king of Macedon.
Philip IX. After his defeat at Pydna, the Romans led Philip IX through the streets of Rome in a triumphal parade. He later hung himself in a Roman prison.
Alexander VII. The last King of Macedon was Alexander VII. He was only 11 when he became king and reigned for but 100 days.


9. Which of these was Macedon's largest export?
Olive oil. The vast groves of olives produced more oil than any other portion of Hellas.
Dates. Only Macedon was far enough east to produce the high quality Syrian style dates so popular in Greece.
Timber. Most of the lumber used for ship building in Greece came from Macedon.
Gold. The mines of Macedon produced more gold than any other in the world.


10. Which great Greek playwright wrote a play in Macedon?
Sophocles wrote "The Women Of Trachis" in Macedon in honor of its state hero, Hercules.
Ionesco wrote, "Exit The King", while visiting Macedon.
Menander, a great admirer of Alexander The Great, wrote, "The Hero" in honor of him.
Euripides wrote. "The Bacchae" in Macedon.
