The following article is from the Sicilian town of Grammichele's webpage. Grammichele was founded after the earthquake of 1693 levelled the ancient community of Occhiola. Archeologists have been carefully preserving artifacts from the Occhiola site for many years. The information below is from that site. I have left the origianl Italian descriptions as well as provided my translations for these items.
DEMETRA, V sec. a.C.
(Museo Archeologico Paolo Orsi, Siracusa) Demetra è la dea della terra coltivata, soprattutto del grano, e della fecondità. Il panneggio a fitte pieghe parallele, la gravità del volto, il sorriso stilizzato, l’eleganza del costume e la minuzia arcaicizzante dell’acconciatura mostrano il trionfo dello spirito ionico.Con la mano destra tiene appoggiato al petto un oggetto di cui si conserva solo la base, mentre porta l’avambraccio sinistro in avanti. The thick folds of her robe parallels the seriousness of her face, the stylized smile, the elegance of the day’s fashion and the meticulousness of her accessories and of her hairstyle show the triumph of the Ionic spirit. With her hand right hand she holds leaned to the chest an object of whom itself alone preserve the base, while door the left forearm in before. Frammento di altorilievo rappresentante Eros (Museo Civico, Grammichele) Il frammento, appartenente alla tarda età ellenistica,è stato rinvenuto nel novembre del 1994 all’interno di una cisterna insieme a resti di grandi blocchi lapidei e di cassette architettoniche;quasi certamente costituiva parte della decorazione di un edificio. Below, the fragment of a statue representing Eros (Municipal Museum, Grammichele) The fragment from the Greek age was recovered in the November of 1994 from the inside of a tank together with large stones; almost certainly constituted part of the decoration of a building. ![]() Eros Fragment Reperti in ceramica (Museo Civico, Grammichele) Questi reperti appartengono alla fase finale dell’età del bronzo; alcuni di essi sono stati ritrovati all’interno di una grande capanna rettangolare. (Municipal Museum, Grammichele) These belong you to the final phase of the Bronze Age. ![]() (Museo Civico, Grammichele) Fanno parte dei corredi funerari della necropoli di Casa Cantoniera. La prima, nella parete esterna della vasca, raffigura un satiro che rapisce una menade; nella seconda, è raffigurato un giovane incedente che conduce un cavallo. (Municipal museum, Grammichele) These are part of the funerari equipment of the necropolis of House Cantoniera. The first one, in the outside wall of the bath, represents a satyr kidnapping a menade; in the second one, a young person is represented leading a horse. ![]() Di un’altra tomba della stessa necropolis fanno parte queste ceramiche indigene e locali realizzate ad imitazione di quelle greco-coloniali.
