The Saturnalia in
retrospect
The Saturnalia 2004 Festival has been a success! The
organizers have been working hard to present a good and full programme with
lots of variations on the Saturnalia theme and the exploration of the Roman
neighborhoods. Tobius Tullius acted as the Princeps Saturnalicius or
Lord of Misrule and he did it brilliantly! Under his lead, all Romans and
other guests partied untill it was time to call it a day.
Several
among us were adorned with a beautiful Saturnalia cap or pileus, made
by Cyhiraeth Volcae (a.k.a. Hecate Flaminius). Thanks for
the nice adornment, Cy!
Hecate Flaminius is the brain behind the
ARS ROMANA writing contest: write a story or poem connected to a
piece or various pieces of Roman Art.
Together with Senex Caecilius
and Calpurnia Caesar, Cyhiraeth worked on a Tour around the Roman
Neighborhoods, connected to the life and journeys around the Roman provinces
by Julius Caesar, called 'Iter-Caesar's Journey'. Senex completed the
virtual journey with a poem about Caesars travel efforts, and so, all AW
members could make virtually to the Roman Neighborhoods, together with
Caesar, as it were....Calpurnia, Cy and Senex, thanks for this nice
Saturnalia 2004 item!
The Inventor's
Quest, by the group Inventions of Mankind and Desdemona Eurimedon and,
again, Cyhiraeth in particular: through a quest among various AW member home
pages, the pieces of a puzzle had to be found and put together to get a
picture of....yes, what was it, Des?
A Roman History Quiz, by Publius Fabius Scipio, took us deep into the ins and
outs of Roman Republican and Imperial facts and figures.....Did you know all
about that?
A Latin Cross Word Contest, made by Caius Fabius, was such a cracker, that it cracked many
heads and brought us one winner and one funny participant, too!
The
home decorating contest, judged by Calpurnia Caesar and Cyhiraeth Volcae, is
the last item to be mentioned here. We partied, banqueted and had a lot of
fun.
This Saturnalia, ergo, was a good one! Thanks to all people who
worked with us to make this fest a dream party! If I have forgotten to
mention anyone, please let me know and I will rectify that in the next
issue.
We are already thinking of the next Roman Springfest 2005 and
will keep you posted and informed on that in the next Acta issue!
Ongoing Projects in the Roman World-
Neighborhoods
After the Roman Neighborhoods report in the last issue
of the Acta Diurna, several members have come up with ideas for cities to be
built in various Roman provinces. I can now report, that the town of Aquae
Sulis (i.e. Roman Bath) and various settlements and towns in the province of
Rhaetia are being worked on at the moment and once these texts and pictures
are ready, they will be added to the Roman Neighborhoods. For an update on
the Roman Hoods Report, check this
link. Would you like to be a Roman Neighborhood or city builder? Please,
check one of the provinces that still need to be worked on and contact your
Roman Scribe Tanaquil Sergius!

Neighborhoods, see: Iter, Caesar's Journey, by Calpurnia Caesar, Cyhiraeth
Volcae and Senex Caecilius!
