Bringing in the New Year!
Welcome to 2005 in the Ancient World! The usual holiday crush of online parties has passed, and most of us are shut up inside our warm houses and dabbling in ancient history and virtual fun.
There were quite a few holiday parties to keep everyone busy! Rome celebrated its Saturnalia, Hellas had its home-decorating contest; Germania went wild chasing Reindeer, das Rheingold and generally reminding us where so many loved traditions of Christmas come from. And as usual, in January many friends who’d disappeared for the holidays were back online sharing their memories. It’s strange, but true, that the online community here seems just as “real” to share your holiday memories with, as with Great-Aunt Lucy and Cousin Shep. A happy New Year to all!
More celebrations!
Speaking of “happy New Year,” The Orient has hot plans to fill the February void with its wonderful Lunar Festival, February 4-13! Enjoy a tour of the Orient and – if Sank, Lalita, and our welcome new Orient Scribe, Aria, keep on adding projects and fun things to do, you’d better put your real life on hold for the festivities!
Best Places at AncientWorlds Awards
We missed the December ACTA deadline when, on December 12, AW held awards for the “Best places of AncientWorlds,” the first in a series of awards on the presentation of history and culture celebrated in our multiple ‘hoods. While many neighborhoods were nominated, the winners – a very hard choice, made by the demis and Jot!– were honored as follows:

Hellas: Attica
Egypt: Nome of the White Wall
Rome: Pompeii
The Orient: India’s Mohenjo-Daro
Germania: Yggdrasil
The Americas: The Oaxaca Valley
Mesopotamia: Babylon
Celtia: Eire
The sheer amount of hard work in history, writing, and graphics evident in all these "tour the world" winners warrants a medal! Congratulations to the winners, but thanks to ALL our volunteers who are working day-in, day-out, to expand the neighborhood resources in their worlds.
