Although Ivy is not really a tree, it is considered part of the Tree Ogham. Ivy's ability to kill even the mightiest oak attests to its great power. Consider its ability to bind together the trees of the forest into impenetrable thickets.

Never take ivy internally because it can be poisonous. It has many good external uses including cleansing for wounds or sores and relief for headaches. (Celtic Tree Mysteries, Blamires)

"Ivy was hung outside the house in England, and still is in Brittany and Normandy, as sign of good cheer, hence arose two proverbs–

'Good wine needs no bush,' i.e., the reputation is sufficiently good without further advertisement; and

'An owl in an Ivy bush,' as “perhaps denoting the union of wisdom or prudence with conviviality, as 'Be merry and wise.'

And nigh thereto a little chappel stoode
Which being all with Yvy overspread
Deckt all the roofe, and shadowing the rode
Seem’d like a grove faire branched over bed.
