Bohemian Megaliths of the Boii Celts
![]() ![]() The Drahomyšl Menhir had been mentioned in literature back in 1859 and is considered one of the more beautiful menhirs in Bohemia. The menhir stands 0.2 mi.(400 meters)from the village of Strkovice near a foot path. Drahomyšl is made from a siliceous sandstone, a coarse to finegrained hard compact sandstone and quartize which is composed of sandstone that has been metamorphosed. It is a smaller menhir in that it's only about 7 feet (2.2 m) tall its estimated mass is 2 tons. This menhir as with other menhirs in Bohemia was most likely erected by the Boii Celts. Drahomyšl is also unusual because of mysterious legends of the protective character and supernatural phenomena that surround it. One story is tha that the local mill wanted to use the stone and tried to move it to get it to the mill but they could not move it at all. Another form of the legend is that the workers from the mill actually did move the menhir to the mill but when strange and unsettling events begun to take place at the mill the stone was returned to its original place. Another legend tells of a prior from the monastery in Zatec around 1668 cried out a curse at a young fugitive monk who convinced a young girl into running away with him. The young monk turned into stone on the spot. The girl accused of causing this tragedy was indicted being a witch, and according to Zatec parish books describing this event, burned to death. This is likely the reason Drahomyšl Menhir is also known as the "Adjured Monk". ![]() Resources, Photos and Credits: The Drahomyšl Menhir Ministry of Environment Czech Republic |
