The Slaný Klobuky Menhir

The village of Klobuky in the Slaný area boasts a rather mysterious historical monument, an 11 ft.(3.5m) high menhir weighing 5.5 tons(5 tonnes). The menhir, known as "Stone Man" and at one time "Stone Shepard", stood here for over the past several thousand years. It is made of a ferric thick-bedded sandstone belonging to the Peruc layers, a cretaceous sandstone and had been brought here from somewhere near Vraný or Peruc. A similar block used to stand somewhere nearby but was overturned and used as building material for local buidings. In 1852 the Slaný Klobuky menhir was also overturned in a strong storm, but citizens of Klobuky concerned with preserving the monument re-erected it to its original stance. The regional historian, R. Koller, theorized the stone originated most likely from the Boii Celtic habitation period in Bohemia.

The story of the stone is that it had been surrounded by six to twelve smaller-size stones, and it used to be called the "Shepherd With His Flock ". This assumption was confirmed in the records of a sugar mill accountant from year 1901, that states 0.12 miles(200m) north of the standing stone two other stones were plowed up, and about twenty eight steps away from the standing stone in the direction of Telce another large-size stone was plowed up. In 2000 another presumption of possible calendar function of this location was confirmed. As per preliminary calculations the sun rose precisely overhead the Rip Mountain summit(A large hill rising up out of the Bohemian flatlands) on April 29, 2000. Sun declination at the rise was just 14,5° (+14°32´11´´)the initial ray turned up behind Saint George Rotunda (5:45:47; azimuth - 66°19´), which at that moment was clearly recognizable via binoculars. The huge red solar disc within its diameter managed to overlay little by little the entire Ríp Mountain, thus one mountain had been formed overhead another one.

Whether the Boii Celts themselves were the constructors, or they used these stones from much older generations of the original population, does not affect the fact this huge menhir near Klobuky was intentionally, and with high accuracy, located within the country so to be able to introduce with great beauty and graciousness the celebration of the season of the year called Beltaine. The phenomenon recurred on August 13 at 5.50 a.m. It started late in summer time - coinciding with the Celtic feast called Lugnasad.
