10 Things to Say
 When You're in Korea

While traveling and living in the Orient, one often visits or beomes friends with a persona who has chosen a Korean family name. In the spirit of becoming more culturally aware and being more Orient-educated, this article is here to give you some helpful greetings and to provide a few important and useful phrases for use in the Korean hoods, homes and with your Korean friends. Here are "10 Things to Say When You're in Korea" that will have you touring the town and greeting your neighbors in no time.

Greetings, Phrases and Questions, Oh my!

Here are a few general, but useful, phrases:

  • anyong hashimnika
    This means: Good Morning
  • Cho-um pepkaysumnida
This means: Nice to meet you
  • kamsa hamnida
    This means: Thank you

Here are some important questions, which, after a long day of trekking through The Orient hoods, might just save the day:

  • jujeomi eodie itsseumnigga ?
    This means: Where's the bar?
  • je bangeun eodie itsseumnigga?
This means: Where is my room?
(I think people use this one most often after they've used the one above!)
  • Hwajangshil-ee odi imnikka?
This means: Where is the bathroom?

A few other phrases/questions that you might find useful in polite conversation are:

  • Chonun Rachana rahgo hamnida
This means: My name is Rachana (but, especially gentlemen, you might want to insert your name in place of mine! *w*).
  • Eehay moht algaysumnida
    This means: I don't understand!
  • ulma yipneega
This means: How much does this cost?
  • badaneun eodie itsseumnigga
This means: Where is the beach?

Last, but apparently not least, this phrase was included in two different articles that I read while doing research for my own article. I'm really not sure why the authors felt so compelled to include it, but I figured if they thought it was important, I ought to include it here. Memorize it well, folks - at least two travel writers think you'll need it:

  • geogie son daeji ma se yo!
This means: Don't touch me there!

So there you are! 10 (or 11!) Things to Say When You're in Korea that will contribute to your scholarly appeal and will be appreciated by any Korean person on the block -- as they probably don't know what to say either! *w* Good luck, and happy visiting!
