Saturnalia 2007 Is Here!

Salvete Omnes!

QuintusCinna Cocceius has designed this fantastic poster for all to use.
This year, Saturnalia runs from December 17th through the 19th. This year promises to be one of the best celebrations ever as Romans at home or aboard can celebrate their favorite holiday in style!

Varius Cicero is running the Second Annual Saturnalia "Consul, Emperor, or Not" Quiz. Everyone who wishes to participate should sign up on the contest page. Senex will have another wonderful advent calendar for Saturnalia 2007 with activities for every day of December. Activities will include a banquet menu, a greeting card, a poem, and a gift return and rewrap. The latter is actually an activity that features rhymed couplets describing gifts that viewers are invited to guess. Stay tuned for more details.

For those of you who cannot get enough celebration, Jerusalem is sponsoring a Saturnalia and Christmas in Jerusalem Celebration starting December 17th and going all the way until December 31st, 2007! Activities in Jerusalem will include:

  • Design Your Own Holiday Card
  • Exchange your Favorite Holiday Recipes
  • The Magi & Their Gifts Writing Contest
  • A Jerusalem (Hierosolyma) Acrostic puzzle
  • And a great big holiday PARTY at the Garden of Eden Cafe!
Most likely, there will be more events, including a coin identification quiz, so stay tuned!

No celebration would be complete without decorations... garlands, candles, holly, and yes, mistletoe! We have hung boughs of mistletoe from every rafter in the ceiling. As it was sanctioned by priests and prudes alike, come and give us a kiss under the Yule-time greenery. Or at least offer a kiss to the person you hold in affectionate esteem - join our Mistletoe Madness.

So for Saturnalia reserve these dates: December 17th through the 19th! For Saturnalia and Christmas in Jerusalem... December 17th through the 31st!

"It is now the month of December, when the greatest part of the city is in a bustle. Loose reins are given to public dissipation; everywhere you may hear the sound of great preparations, as if there were some real difference between the days devoted to Saturn and those for transacting business....Were you here, I would willingly confer with you as to the plan of our conduct; whether we should eve in our usual way, or, to avoid singularity, both take a better supper and throw off the toga."

-Seneca the Younger
