Groups in the Spotlight!
dateline: Nov 28, 2003 - 05:23
Each week, we shall present one of the various interesting groups Germania has to offer. This week our focus is on the latest addition - The Vliegende Hollander, a group which is dedicated to the Dutch history and culture and also provides a home for the quite numerous Dutch membership of this site - but not only for them. In the short time since its founding, it has already developed very nicely. The group leader, Hadewigis Folcwalding, did an excellent job - check it out right away or read the full article for some more information first.
The aim of this group is bringing the Lowlands "back on the map". Offering a wide variety of boards, covering geography, history, language, literature, art and cuisin and also disposing of a snug café and bar, it is definitely a grand place - and not only for those whose native language is Dutch or Flemish - the lingua franca is English and those who write in Dutch are providing a summary of their contribution. A wonderful addition to Germania!! by: Yngvildr Scylding
Thank you Yng!
Hello all! First I would like to thanks Yng for her help and support to set up the group. I would have been able to do it without her help of many members. As Yng already says, our aim is to put the history of the Lowlands back into the spotlight. Everybody heard of Piet Hein and Michiel de Ruyter, Anne Frank etc. but what did they exactly do that made them so famous and interesting. We also like to touch other aspects of the Dutch culture, for example its art (van Gogh, Rembrandt), its Dutch Royal Blue and all those particularities so very known like bikes, tulips and its special policy with cannabis. Our lingua franca is English to make the group accesible to all those interested in the Lowlands, eventhough many members of the group like to post a little summary in Dutch or vice-versa to give the group that identity. Nonetheless we like to encourage other non-Dutch speakers to learn to understand the language thanks to the Crash Course Dutch for beginners. All that is left for me to say is Welkom allen en tot ziens!*
*Welcome all and see you soon!
Great Idea
I love the idea of a "group" in the spotlight on a regular basis and much prefer this concept to that of the "Neghbourhood" project. Excellent idea! :) ~ Andabairhta Gunthigg |
